Interview mam Jo Cotterill

Jo Cotterill Oct 2018

I am really glad you’ve accepted my interview. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.
You’re welcome!

Can you tell us a bit more about how you became a writer?
I loved writing stories as a child but never thought about becoming a writer. Years later when I was a professional actor, I found my career frustrating because so much of it was waiting around! I started a course for writing for children and became hooked.

Was it difficult for the first book to find a publisher?
My first book never found a publisher! The book I eventually had published wasn’t my first by a long, long way. To be honest, that’s because my first few efforts to write for children just weren’t good enough! It was about three years after I started submitting, and over 50 rejections before I was lucky. My first published book was MOONDANCE, a picture book for young children, and it found a publisher straight away.

Could you describe literature in three words?
Expanding, escapist, mind-adventure

Is there a book you would never read? Why?
Fifty Shades of Grey. Because I am a feminist, and the messages this book sends to women are toxic.

What’s your favorite book?
Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Favorite quote?
A book is like a garden in the pocket – Chinese proverb

EBooks or paper print?
Paper print. But there’s definitely room for both in the world!

What inspires you?
Real-life stories of courage and compassion

Imagine you were given the opportunity to meet a book character in real life. Who would that be?
Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables

Please explain.
She’s a character full of imagination and curiosity, ambition and intelligence. I’d love to go for a walk with her and see the world through her eyes.

What’s your worst nightmare?
Losing my children

The best decision of your life was?
Taking a risk on a friend when no one else would

I can’t wait to read your next book. Are you currently working on a project? Is there any release date to reveal?
My latest book is JELLY, published in the UK in June. I’ve had a bit of a break from writing since then, so there aren’t any new ones in the pipeline just yet. However, I have just this last week pitched a new idea to my publisher, so watch this space…! Any news will be announced on my website
